Spain fire destroys more than 700 acres

Spanish firefighters gained control of a forest fire that broke out in the southern part of the country, destroying more than 700 acres of land, officials said. More than 900 families were evacuated Sunday in the Costa del Sol towns of Marbella, Ojen and Mijas in the southern municipality of Malaga, where about 741 acres of scrub land and pine forest have been affected, EFE reported. Authorities have brought the flames under control but are still unclear whether the fire was a result of arson or negligence. Another fire broke out nearby just a few hours earlier in similar circumstances, officials said. The Costa del Sol motorway was closed for a short while as smoke billowed out from the affected area. The area remains on red alert as intense heat and the wind continue to threaten the villages.
